Vintage movie night: Ramon Novarro in 'The Flying Fleet' (1929)

Classic aviation drama filmed on location at U.S. Navy bases; silent with live music!

Two graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy, now training as aviators, fall for the same gal off base. Mark Memorial Day weekend with this starstudded tribute made with full cooperation of the U.S. Navy, so a great chance to see what the service was like back in the day, plus some vintage stunt flying from 'The Three Seahawks,' an early aerobatic team.

FlyingFleetThis silent MGM drama, starring Ramon Novarro and Anita Page, will be accompanied by Jeff Rapsis, executive director of the Aviation Museum. Jeff is Aviation Museum board members tour the Manchester School of Technology with Principal Karen Machado. a musician who specializes in creating live music for silent film screenings at venues around New England, and we're delighted he's lending his talents to the Aviation Museum's programming line-up. 'The Flying Fleet' was made with U.S. Navy cooperation, with the note appearing in the opening credits: "Dedicated to the officers and men of NAVAL AVIATION whose splendid co-operation made this production possible." The film was the first major Hollywood production to use Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego. The USS Langley appears in several scenes. The inclusion of "The Three Sea Hawks" aerobatic team was a highlight of The Flying Fleet. Drawing from VB-2B squadron at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, the team used three Boeing F2B-1 and F2B-2 fighters. Its first demonstration in January 1928 at San Francisco gave rise to a popular nickname: "Suicide Trio" although officially the team was called "Three Sea Hawks." 'The Flying Fleet' (1929) starring Ramon Novarro and Anita Page will be screened with live music on Thursday, May 23 at 7 p.m. at the Aviation Museum of N.H., 27 Navigator Way, Londonderry, N.H.
